July 14th, 1789 - A terrible thing happened this afternoon while my lady and i were at the palace at Versailles. Hundreds of civilians who were angry about the lack of food in the city attacked the prison and fortress of Bastille, demanding gunpowder and the release of the prisoners. When the man in charge - the Marquis de Launay - refused them, they broke into the fortress, captured the arsenal, and seized de Launay and his men. The mob then dragged them through the streets of Paris. Both my lady and her husband, the King, were very much afraif that this was the beginning of a revolution in France.
Many of the other ladies-in-waiting told me that they were planning on evacuations the city beacause of fear for their lives. I am afraid also, but am very loyal to the queen, so I'm not sure what I am going to do.
